Google Wave Extension Generator

We have decided to contribute to the Google Wave developer community by releasing some of the internal tools and API’s that we use at withwaves.com by building Google Wave Extensions.

If you already have Java, Ant, Maven and the Java App Engine SDK installed, simply execute the following command in your console:

mvn archetype:generate -DarchetypeCatalog=http://mvn.withwaves.com

After entering the values for your project, you will have a running Google Wave robot & gadget ready in no time.

Use the same command to generate extensions in the future and you will have the option to enable new features as we release more extension generators.

Check out the videos below for a demo creating a simple "Hello World" robot and gadget, and optionally running it inside Eclipse and the Google Plugin for Eclipse.

When you create your Google Wave extension with our generator this is what you get… Continued »

AmazonBot: UI updates, languages and marketplace support

amazonbot-settingsWe’re pretty excited to push another update to our first Google Wave bot – the AmazonBot. The update includes a refreshed UI, Amazon Marketplaces support, and language localization. We’re well aware of the fact that our translations may be off (we’re trying!) and welcome any and all feedback.

  • UI Updates: Maintaining our minimalist approach to providing content from within Google Wave, we’ve retooled the UI so that future bot releases can share the same components. We’ve also added a new settings dialog for selecting your default Amazon Marketplace and preferred language.
  • Marketplace Support: Answering requests from users, we’ve added the option to select an appropriate Amazon Marketplace. No point shopping for items that Amazon won’t deliver to your doorstep right?
  • Language Localization: Our first attempt for language support. In addition to specifying your Amazon Marketplace, we now offer the option to specify your preferred language. This setting is not shared between all participants and is defaulted to your browser locale. UI brokenness may ensue but we’re working on it. Currently supporting: English (US, CAN, UK), Spanish, Japanese, German, and French.

Shopping Amazon’s Japan Marketplace but still a little rough reading Japanese? Simply change the language option from the settings dialog. Stay tuned for more updates by subscribing to our RSS feed or following us on Twitter @withwaves.

Tell us what bot you want to see, receive a Google Wave invite

WithWaves has continued active development on Google Wave bots since the launch of the developer preview. Since then, we’ve launched this site, a few bots, and received feedback for future bot updates. Unfortunately, Google Wave is still in preview mode which means access for the general public is controlled by the ebb and flow of existing users receiving and sharing. We want to help share Wave.

At the moment, we have 10 invites to share with WithWaves readers with more on the way. To enter for your chance to receive an invite, you must do two things:

  • Add @withwaves on Twitter.
  • Send out a Twitter update to help share the WithWaves Google Wave Development. Somewhere in the Tweet include this link http://j.mp/ey1uZ and hashtag #wwdevs. Invites will go out to the Tweets with the best ideas for a new Google Wave bot idea.

Example Tweet to use:

RT Wave Invites http://j.mp/ey1uZ – @withwaves should create a bot to [YOUR IDEA HERE] – #wwdevs

On November 16th, we will send a direct message to users with the best bot ideas requesting contact info for a invite.

New bot support: Click to query selected text

We have updated the AmazonBot, AmazonMP3Bot and eBayBot to support contextual text selection. To see this new feature in action you need to have the Robots installed with the extension installer.

Simply edit any message in a wave with text and select the word(s) that you want the robot to analyze. Once the text is selected click the toolbar extension and we will automatically add the robot to the wave and analyze your selection offering matched content based on the selected robot.

Receive alerts of new activity on your desktop

Not entirely development related, but useful nonetheless. Two methods for receiving updates to Wave conversations:

Google Wave NotifierIf you are following and contributing to Waves, you’re going to want to know when replies are posted. If you are the type to reply to new messages ASAP, you may want to check out these two desktop options.

Wander on over to That Smith and snag the Google Wave Add-on for Firefox. In true Wave adoption fashion, Chad is using the service to announce updates or provide feedback for the browser extension – Google Wave Add-on Wave (Wave account required). The extension brings the same convenient functionality to any OS assuming Firefox is installed.

For those who prefer the SSB or single site browser route, check out Devthought where you can find a step-by-step getting Wave setup with Fluid. Devthought includes a convenient userscript which appends the Dock icon with an unread badge icon whenever new activity is detected.
